Introducing Gmail

Gmail is an email service.

Introducing Gmail

Gmail is one of the most widely used email services in the world, and has been the number one for years. The service was founded in 2001 by an engineer from the group, while the project was the subject of some skepticism. Known under the code name Caribou, the platform had its first public version in 2004.

Finally, Gmail has continued to attract users since its arrival on the market about twenty years ago. In 2018, the messaging service claimed more than 1.5 billion active users worldwide.

How to use the mailbox?

Downloading Gmail means first installing the mobile application or using the online service to create an account, in which case you must define an email address and a password. Once this is done, all you have to do is log in to the service to discover all the features of the messaging service.

Whether with the mobile application or the online service, Gmail relies on an interface that is intended to be very easy to use. On the web version, there is a toolbar located on the left of the screen, this allows you to navigate between your content. In fact, you can go to your inbox to view all the messages you have received earlier. In addition, it is possible to see the followed, pending and sent messages or to find your drafts.

Additional Gmail categories include important or scheduled messages, spam, chats, categories (social networks, promotions, etc.), spam, and trash. Otherwise, you can create and manage your labels, which are mentions that can accompany the messages of your choice so that you can find them more easily.

In addition to all these categories, Gmail displays a “New Message” button that saves you time when you want to write and send an email. Otherwise, the central area of the screen is reserved for your content, you find your exchanges with the sender, the subject, the beginning of the message as well as the date of receipt. With one click, you can reply, delete, archive, mark as read or put on hold.

From Gmail, a second toolbar placed on the right of the screen lets you access other Google services, such as Drive, Meet or Calendar.

Otherwise, Gmail has a smart reply feature. Depending on the content of an email you receive, the messaging service can suggest responses through several options, you just have to click on one of them so that it is included in your email. In the same vein, you can schedule sending’s to go out on the date and time of your choice so that you no longer have to worry about it.

Gmail has a mobile application for smartphones and tablets that run on Android and iOS. In addition, it is possible to enjoy the platform from the online service that is accessible with any internet browser in addition to Google Chrome.

Download Gmail is free. Google’s email does not require any subscription or payment from you, you can use it without any limits.

Alternatives to Gmail

Gmail is an extremely popular messaging service, it has been among the most used platforms in its category for years. It has a very easy-to-use interface for exchanging and sorting your email, which makes it successful. On the other hand, be aware that it is possible to find alternatives in case you do not want to use Google’s service.

Instead of downloading Gmail, you can choose Microsoft Outlook. While the first service belongs to Google, the second is obviously owned by Microsoft, it must be said that the two have been in direct competition for years. Add to this that the online service and the mobile application (Android and iOS) remain free, but you must take the Microsoft 365 suite to access the desktop application on a Windows or macOS computer. In this case, be aware that this is an annual subscription that can be suitable for individuals or businesses. With this formula, you benefit from the entire office suite in one go, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and others.

Like Gmail, Microsoft Outlook presents itself as an email service with advanced features. You have all the tools you need to manage your emails easily, both in a personal and professional setting. At the same time, you also benefit from a calendar and a task manager, which allows you to organize yourself with ease.

If you want to choose a service of French origin, Orange Mail can be presented as a replacement for Gmail. As its name suggests, it is an email service that belongs to the telecom operator of the same name. Once again, you can choose the mobile application for smartphones and tablets under Android and iOS or the online service from any internet browser.

Compared to Gmail, Orange Mail presents itself as a simpler email service. In fact, it does not use the smart replies suggested by the platform, for example. In return, it has all the features needed to sort and organize your emails, which also makes it a good option.

Gmail in a nutshell

  • Advanced features like smart replies
  • Direct access to other Google tools like the calendar
  • A completely free messaging service
